My four children are in the state system and are all dyslexic. It has been very difficult to sit by and watch their self esteem drop over the years (particularly in primary school) and experience the schools relentless opinion that they lack intelligence; knowing otherwise.
My daughter lacked confidence in maths and during year 6 when she was doing her SATS she got so overwhelmed by the pressure the school put the pupils under that she developed a nervous rash on her hands that didn’t go away until she left the school in the summer. I used the Davis methods to help her in her maths and she attained a high 5 level in her results having previously worked to a level 3. She is now in the top set for maths in secondary school and is confident in her abilities even though the school believed the SATs result to be a fluke as it was a surprise to them.
The Davis techniques are holistic and work directly with the anxieties experienced because of the learning difficulties. Seeing how maths worked (ie using clay and visual learning techniques) enabled Verity to understand maths, rather than just having to remember the rules. The dyslexic mind is so enquiring that being given ‘rules’ begs the question ‘why?’. Seeing how maths works enables them to work out ‘why’ for themselves, it boosts confidence and boosts learning.
